10th Annual CANAC/ACIIS Conference
Social Justice: The Essence of HIV/AIDS Nursing

2002 Conference Overview
Overview
HIV/AIDS care is complex and continues to challenge nurses and the health care system. At the 1995 CANAC/ACIIS conference held in Vancouver, HIV/AIDS and injection drug use, women and HIV/AIDS and ethical issues and moral distress were topics addressed at the end of the meeting. These topics are now the leading challenges in HIV/AIDS nursing. The 2002 conference will provide a forum for nurses with diverse backgrounds to share expertise, examine problems and together seek practical approaches. Whether you work in HIV/AIDS care, or you want to expand your knowledge in the care of people living with HIV/AIDS, this conference will be of interest to you.

Conference Site
Vancouver in mid April wears her Spring dress. Ornamental trees in bloom line the city's streets. Your hotel room will overlook English Bay and the lush 1,000-acre parkland that is Stanley Park with its beaches, walking, cycling, roller-blading and jogging paths. The Vancouver Aquarium is only steps from your hotel.

Conference Theme:
Social Justice
Struggles for social justice are often articulated as struggles for fundamental rights and freedoms. Our focus is on expanding nurses' capacity for sensitivity and advocacy in caring for vulnerable individuals and populations. Luigi Taparelli d'Azeglio, a Sicilian priest, first used the term social justice in 1840. He believed all members of society should have an equal access to the benefits and opportunities of their society regardless of their position or station in life. For nurses embracing social justice, it is an awareness of the implications of the social determinants of health and a commitment to accessible and culturally competent health care.

Opening Plenary
Social Justice is as pertinent to today as it has been throughout nursing's history. Plenary speaker Stephen Lewis, formerly Deputy Executive Director of UNICEF and Canada's Ambassador to the United Nations, is one of Canada's finest speakers. A passionate advocate of individual rights and needs, Mr. Lewis was recently appointed Special Envoy on AIDS in Africa by UN Secretary General Kofi Annan.
